Definition: Drive
A drive is the power electronics which is used to control the
speed of a motor. Common names used for drives are inverter or
amplifier. Drives may be smart or dumb.
- Smart drive - has some degree of logic functionality. Smart
drives vary from having simple logic functions to having full-fledged
controller capability.
- Dumb drive - makes no decisions. This type of drive merely
takes the input speed signal and translates it to the correct
settings of voltage, current, and/or frequency to control the
motor.
