NEMA motor starters refer to a standardized rating system for the electrical performance of the most common style of American-built motor starters. NEMA starters are rated by size: 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Unlike IEC starters, most NEMA starters use heater-based overload relays, but this is not required by the standard. Compared to the IEC rating system, NEMA starters are much more conservatively rated, and are thus preferred by most factories in the United States. However, the NEMA starters are also substantially more expensive than the equivalently rated IEC starter.
