Instructions for the Brother MFC-7150 and MFC-7160 Multi-Function Series Printers
Theory
The ink in this cartridge is retained because the cartridge has an internal
sponge. There are also a couple of ink filled chambers which make this one
rather tricky.
Instructions
Step 1) Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you
can tolerate a spill.
Warning: This cartridge can be extremely messy to refill.
Please wear latex or rubber gloves and old clothes. Cover all
surfaces that the ink can drip onto with newspaper.
Step 2)
Step 3) Take the cartridge and locate the hole on the bottom through which the ink
normally exits the cartridge. (There is often a dark plug in this
hole.) This is the exit hole.
Step 4) On the bottom, you will also find another hole. This is the
vent hole. It should be located on the same side of the cartridge as
the large ring-like handle on the top of the cartridge.
Step 5) Turn the exit port down (toward your lap). Place the exit hole
on the left and the vent hole to the right.
Step 6) Using black electrical tape (NOT giftwrap tape,
duct tape, or masking tape!), tape over the exit port so that it
is sealed air tight. If the port is not sealed, you will have a
large leak when you put in the new ink.
Step 7) Remove the plastic handle from the top of the cartridge by
bending it up and prying the end loose with a flat-headed screwdriver
or similar device.
Step 8) You will now see two metallic seals. The smaller one seals
a round hole, while the larger one seals a rectangular hole.
Step 9) Remove the metallic seals or poke holes through them with
the syringe needle.
Step 10) Fill the syringe bottle with ink. Use:
- WJ1023 Black
- WJ294 Cyan
- WJ691 Magenta
- WJ760 Yellow
To fill the syringe, squeeze the syringe bottle and insert the needle into the large ink bottle. Tilt the bottle if necessary so that the ink covers the end of the needle. Now, relax your grip and let the syringe suction up the ink into the syringe bottle.
Step 11) Take the syringe bottle and inject the ink slowly into the
sponge through the rectangular hole on the top right of the cartridge.
Push the needle deeply into the sponge and slowly lift the needle so that the entire sponge is saturated with ink. Try to eliminate any
air bubbles.
Step 12) Now inject additional ink into the top round hole on the
top left of the cartridge until the outer chamber is completely full
of ink.
Step 13) Using black electrical tape, seal the top round hole above
the outer chamber airtight. You must get this seal airtight or
there will be a large leakage of ink!
Step 13) Seal the top rectangular hole with black electrical tape. It
is not as necessary to get this hole airtight.
Step 14) Snap the top plastic handle back into place.
Step 15) When ready to install in the printer, go to a sink first.
Over a sink, remove the tape on the
bottom of the cartridge. Expect a few drops of ink to leak out. This
is normal. However, be sure that there is plenty of ink left in the bottom of the outer chamber.
Step 16) Install in printer.
To Clean the Printhead
Clean the printhead only if the cartridge doesn't print or prints in
streaks.
Follow the directions in the printer manual.
To Clean Your Sink
The ink is water-soluble. Use plenty of soap and warm water. You may also
need to use Comet or a similar cleaner if the stains persist.
To Clean Your Hands
On hands, the best substance to use is
Ink Be GoneTM, a
specially developed hand cleaner available from ACSI Bulk Inks.
