Refilling Instructions for Xerox and Sharp Cartridges

Z-20 (6R737), Z-30(6R733), Z-50(6R343), Z-70(6R359), Z-835 (6R881)

Theory

This cartridge uses both a toner and a developer. The proper match between these two is critical for good performance. Both should be replaced each time.

Tools

You will need the following:

a medium sized flat screwdriver.
a medium-sized cross-head screwdriver.
Alternative Method: a drill with a 3/8" to 5/8" bit (10-15mm) or a soldering iron.
Alternative Method: some black electrical tape.

Preferred Procedure

Spread a newspaper upon which you will work. Be sure that there is at least two layers of newspaper. Do not work in an area with breezes. Do not breath the toner or developer, since it is very irritating (as is any inhaled dust). Do not wear nice clothing.
(Z835)Locate the clear waste box at the end of the cartridge. Remove this box by removing the two screws. There is a sliding door on the waste box which covers an opening for vacuuming out waste toner.
On the end of the cartridge or behind the waste box is a plastic plate secured by a single screw and a clip. Arrange the cartridge so the Green part in toward the upper right and the screw is toward the lower left. Remove the screw.
There is a clip above the Green part. Push down on this with a flat-head screwdriver to release the plastic plate.
Be sure that the flat side of the cartridge is up. You will now see the large fill cap for toner. It is located in the right corner of the cartridge. Pry the plug out, or make a hole in the plug. If you drilled a hole in the plug, remember to vacuum out the shavings.
Make a paper funnel or use any dry funnel. Fill with toner and seal. You may use electrical tape for the seal.
Near the left center of the same end is the small plug for the developer chamber. (It is about half the size of the toner plug.) Once again, remove the plug or make a hole in it. If you decide to drill a hole in the plug, remember to vacuum out the shavings.
Fill the small hole with developer and seal. You may use electrical tape for the seal.
Replace the plastic plate (on the Z835) and the clear waste box.
Shake the cartridge gently to disperse the toner and developer.
Fold up the top layer of newsprint. Wrap the lower layer of newsprint around the top layer and dispose of.
The toner and developer should wash off your hands easily.

Alternative Procedure

Be sure that the flat side of the cartridge is up and the end with the waste box is toward you. (On some models without a waste box, the diagonal side is toward your left and the molded instructions are in the top right side of the cartridge.
Arrange the cartridge so that the molded instructions are on the top right side of the cartridge. Approximately half way along the instructions, drill a 3/8 to 1/2 inch hole (10-15 mm). Do not let your drill bit penetrate too deep into the cartridge to avoid damage to other cartridge parts. (You may melt a hole using a soldering iron). Vacuum out the shavings.
Make a paper funnel or use any dry funnel. Fill with toner and seal. You may use electrical tape for the seal.
On the slanted smoother left of the top surface, drill another hole into the developer chamber. If you decide to drill a hole in the plug, remember to vacuum out the shavings.
Fill the small hole with developer and seal. You may use electrical tape for the seal.
Replace the clear waste box.
Shake the cartridge gently to disperse the toner and developer.
Fold up the top layer of newsprint. Wrap the lower layer of newsprint around the top layer and dispose of.
The toner and developer should wash off your hands easily.
