Revelations

The NBC Miniseries "Revelations" is bound to attract some viewers. It supposedly talks about the Christian view of the end of the world. However -- as usual -- the Hollywood script gives up Truth in favor of a gnostic interpretation.

Gnosis -- the idea of a hidden special knowledge -- is the attraction which sold "The Da Vinci Code", "The X-Files", and "Battlestar Gallatica". In each case, the story revolves around a "neat idea" which isn't true. Whether the neat idea is the concept that Jesus married Mary Magdalene or that UFO's exist or that Earth is the lost colony founded by the lost tribe or the latest one -- that Jesus will be born again as a baby -- Truth doesn't matter. Unfortunately, many of the uneducated will be taken in by these concepts. Are you one of them?

It is interesting to observe the number of people who are willing to shell out $19.95 for a fictional book about a fictional concept -- and then talk about the concept as though the concept is real and "deep". Yet, for less than $10, you can buy a modern, readable translation of the Bible itself and read the real message of God in a book that is much deeper, that has infinite ideas to ponder, and has been shown to be true by historical, literary, and archeological research over many generations. Or are you afraid to read the Bible? Are you afraid you might get your socks knocked off by the ideas?

If you have never read the Bible, I challenge you to read it. Since the Bible is a collection of writings intended for different audiences, you need to read it a bit differently than most books.

If you have a good understanding of Jewish history and custom, start reading at the Book of Matthew. If not, start at the Book of Mark.

You'll find that the actual ideas are much more interesting than what you heard they were.
