Introduction

For who is like Me?
Who will arraign Me?
And who is that shepherd
Who will withstand Me?
Jeremiah 50:44

Evangelical Christians are all over the news today. According to some, Evangelicals are responsible for all the hate in society. According to others, Evangelicals are also responsible for the electoral victories of George W. Bush. In Russia and France, evangelicals are called cults, while in most of Africa and Latin America the Evangelical Movement is the fastest growing religion. In the United States, Evangelicals may be the largest group, surpassing Catholics, “mainstream” denominations, and fundamentalists in church-going attendance.

If you are in business, journalism, entertainment, or politics, you have certain questions about Evangelicals: Who are these people? What do they believe that is different – and the same – as other Christian groups? Additionally, how do their doctrinal differences affect their lives, their daily decisions about what television to watch, which products to buy, what stores to shop at, which news channel to view, which politician to vote for, and which movies to watch?

If you are new to an Evangelical church, you have other questions: Just what do your new friends believe? Are their beliefs grounded in sound ideas, or are they flaky? What will be expected of you?

Additionally, there are other questions of an even more personal nature: Are you an Evangelical Christian – or should you be one? Why are so many people becoming Evangelical Christians? Do Evangelical Christians truly understand God or are they just another cult, deluded by charismatic leaders?

How should you relate to an Evangelical Christian you know at work? Why does he keep talking to you about God and Christ? For that matter, how do God and Christ relate to each other?

If any of these questions are important to you, then you will want to read this book. For that is our subject matter.
