Introduction

The Evangelical Christian Myths

All of the people I've listed above (and myself) fell prey to one or more Myths about Evangelical Christianity. The Evangelical Christianity that they “know” is as much like real Evangelical Christianity as cheap hot dogs are like filet mignon. And each of us has been poorer for believing those myths. As the saying goes, "A little knowledge is dangerous."
Throughout history, many of the greatest thinkers and leaders of our world have been Christians – Christians in the tradition that led to modern Evangelical Christianity.

  • Presidents: Washington, Adams, Lincoln, F. Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Reagan, G.W. Bush
  • Leaders: Churchill, Patton, McClelland, Macarthur, Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Entertainers: Jimmy Stewart, Maria Von Trapp, Bing Crosby, Charlton Heston, Mel Gibson,
  • Scientists: Newton, Boyle, Franklin,
  • Authors: C.S. Lewis, James Dobson, John Bunyan, Patrick O'Brien, Robert Heinlein, Tom Clancy, John Grisham
  • Explorers: Christopher Columbus, The Pilgrims, Buzz Aldrin, Rick Husband
  • Philosophers: Augustine, St. Francis, Blaise Pascal and many others.

These intelligent, capable, and talented people would not have been attracted to a fringe concept without a solid, logical basis for their belief. Yet, the "Christianity" of today's popular culture is filled with myths. Many people think that real Christianity is what Hollywood teaches. But "Hollywood Christianity" is not the True Faith that is held by mature Evangelical Christians.

Why Read This Book?

The purpose of this book is to explode those myths and explain what Evangelical Christianity is.

  • If you are a journalist, politician, or businessman and need to understand Evangelical Christianity, you’ll get a solid background on the beliefs of this large group of “red-state” people.
  • If you are searching for Truth, after you have read this book you'll understand what Evangelical Christianity really is about. You will have been intellectually honest with yourself. You’ll better understand where the Evangelicals are coming from and you’ll be better equipped to discuss with them philosophical and moral issues.
  • If you are a Believer, you'll be better equipped to explain Evangelical Christianity to your friends. You might want to use this book in a group study for new Christians.
  • If you are truly searching for Truth, this book should help you by stripping away the Hollywood myths and bringing out the True Faith that two hundred million Americans claim as their own.
