A Word to the Knowledgeable Reader
Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. Romans 14:1
Gentle Reader, if I were to take you and all the other readers of this book into a nearby paint store and ask you and the others to mix the color of paint that represents the color of sunshine, I expect that several things would happen.
- First, some people would choose not to do this.
- Second, of those that did this, almost all would mix a shade of yellow to represent sunshine.
- Third, very few people would mix exactly the same shade of yellow.
- Fourth, some people would mix their shade quickly and almost haphazardly, finishing in a few minutes, while others would mix their paint meticulously and take hours, indeed even days to get the shade “just right”.
- Five, several people would then argue over how their shade better represented sunlight than the next person’s shade of yellow did.
And the same is true of the subject of this book. I fully expect that some Christians will disagree with the exact words I use to describe our joint beliefs, and will insist that they do not believe what I say that they do. That is fine – I agree with you – you probably do not believe everything I have written, although some of your fellow Evangelicals will agree with me on just the very points where you disagree. Meanwhile, they will disagree with me where you agree. But, in the main, Evangelicals believe and act according to how I’ve stated.
